On our watch • While it might not be the biggest surprise for those of us who live in this region, we’re thrilled to note that the three safest cities in the world are in Asia. Tokyo, Singapore and Osaka are at the top of the table recently released by the Economist Intelligence Unit. Sydney came in at fifth place, Seoul tied Copenhagen for eighth, and Melbourne was 10th.

#TL ASIA • THIS MONTH, OUR READERS LOOK AT THE ADVENTUROUS SIDE OF ASIA.

EDITOR’S NOTE

Travel + Leisure Southeast Asia

no. 1 The ultimate insider’s guide to local dining. • T+L’s monthly selection of trip-worthy places, experiences and events.

no. 2 A rustic-chic twist on Tibetan hospitality in the Sangke Grasslands.

no. 3 Central’s dazzling new dining hubs. • While Hong Kong’s farther-flung neighborhoods continue to gentrify at a rapid pace, there’s no denying that Central still holds court as the city’s most densely packed—and arguably most delicious—gastronomic hub. With flashy skyscrapers and largescale restorations constantly in the works, the past year has given rise to a number of new dining destinations that should be on every food tourist’s hit list.

no. 4 Next-gen hotel swag.

no. 5 Coral-friendly sunscreen from Banyan Tree.

That’s so Showa • Off the west coast of Japan, Adam H. Graham visits Sado Island seeking an immersion in the nation’s golden age, and discovers a shingle-roofed, pine-ridged, Midcentury time capsule.

Heritage Row • The Capitol Kempinksi Hotel Singapore is a cozy complex spanning three historic buildings. Jeninne Lee-St.John makes herself at home.

The Storyteller • Literature allows us to explore the world as much as any of our trips, says author Viet Thanh Nguyen, who explains that he longs for the day he can visit Asia just for the sheer joy of travel.

The Shape of You • A sun-drenched retreat in the Gulf of Thailand wants to improve your posture. Amelia Lester discovers the benefits of sitting up straight.

Modern Manors • If a 413-room hotel could ever be likened to a private home, then Rosewood Hong Kong looks to be just that—and it’s not as much of a stretch as you might think.

Change is Brewing • Craft beer isn’t the sole domain of men anymore. Across Asia, trailblazing female brewers are transforming the industry. Craig Sauers talks with some of the best in the business.

WHERE TO DRINK

4 OTHER WOMEN ON TAP • Winnie Hsu recommends some of her favorite bars and breweries elsewhere in Asia where women run the show.

The Qatari Reverie • DISCOVER THIS MIDDLE EASTERN GEM FOR A TRIP FILLED WITH TRADITION AND LUXURY.

An Ocean Apart • With Gallic gentility to spare, Ponant’s new ship takes guests from the Seychelles to Sri Lanka for a close-up look at some of the world’s most beautiful—and delicate—marine environments.

Secret and Secluded • A little-known north Borneo beach is Sabah’s best alternative diving spot, writes Marco Ferrarese, who asks that you keep Mengkabar Bay to yourself—and don’t disturb the tarsiers.
