Australian Muscle Car

Issue 110
Magazine

Australian Muscle Car is a fresh, proudly Australian publication dedicated to preserving the legend of the unique ‘Australian made’ Ford vs Holden muscle car heritage. From 1960s classic Bathurst muscle to the super sophisticated Falcon and Commodore performance cars of the new millennium and everything in between.

ZL1 sledgehammer • HSV’s Camaro ZL1 isn’t cheap, but nothing else in its price range comes close to delivering the same kind of sledgehammer bang for buck, as Bruce Newton discovered when he was let loose in HSV’s new performance flagship.

Set for a Retrial • Phil Walmsley is set for a Retrial. Sorry, we mean he is set to go on the Retrial – the Repco Round Oz Retrial. Here the BCOAA identity talks us through his planning for the big event, which will see him circumnavigate the continent in a genuine VC ‘Brock’ Commodore, no less than AMC issue #60’s cover car.

Turning Japanese • For more than a decade, Allan Moffat was Ford’s racing hero, but all that changed in the early 1980s. Having been abandoned by Ford, he abandoned them, handing the Blue Oval mantle to Dick Johnson. Worse than that, he sided with Japanese carmaker Mazda to race an RX7. David Hassall unravels a remarkable story.

Where are they now?

Civil war • There may not have been much Ford opposition but it was still one of the most hotly contested ATCC title fights ever. It was a fiercely fought and sometimes bitter civil war between two Holden camps: Peter Brock and the factory Holden Dealer Team vs Bob Morris and the Ron Hodgson Motors squad.

Bob Morris’ recollections:

The one that got away • For John Sheppard, the 1979 ATCC will forever be the one that got away. Here the former HDT boss provides his recollections of a turbulent championship season and the battle against the privateer Hogdson Torana team.

Redemption • When the opportunity presented itself to Peter Molloy to team up with Bob Morris for an assault on the Australian Touring Car Championship, Molloy relished the opportunity not just to try to win the ATCC but also to settle an old score.

Two of a kind • The two Ron Hodgson Racing Torana A9Xs Bob Morris used to win the 1979 Australian Touring Car Championship live on today. Not only is this pair of legendary A9X Group C race machines still with us, but they reside once more under the same roof, with both cars now owned by historic racer Andrew Cannon.

The name of the game • He carries the biggest Aussie name in world motorsport, but Geoff Brabham wasn’t content to be just a famous son. He carved out a remarkable international career over two decades – in Can-Am, Indycars, IMSA sports cars, Le Mans and even stock cars – then returned home to score more wins, including a controversial one at Bathurst

Round Oz Odyssey • The dream of driving around Australia is something that for most of us will remain always that: a dream, an unfulfilled item on the bucket list. That’s not the case, however, for a small group of Ford enthusiasts, who earlier this year took on the challenge of circumnavigating this wide brown land in a pair of Falcon XY GT-HO Phase IIIs.

The Snub • It’s 50 years since GM-H turned its back on reigning Bathurst winner Bruce McPhee ahead of the 1969 Hardie-Ferodo 500. It’s a baffling snub that very nearly came back to haunt...
