Under the Chequered Flag

A RARE RACER RETURNS • The RC70F preceded Honda’s next production motocrosser by 15 years. Few were made, and perhaps only two survive.

Roger Barker A short life • In 1957, Roger Barker, originally from the NSW country town of Mudgee, achieved his lifetime ambition to compete at the Isle of Man. He did so with distinction, finishing the incredibly gruelling eight-lap Senior TT in tenth place, after nearly three and a half hours of racing, and averaging an impressive 90.79 mph.

BUILT IN THE BASEMENT • In earlier issues we have followed the amazing creations that have emerged from the tiny workshop (known as The Basement) under Dan Smith’s house in Vancouver, Canada.

Spot the difference

Home on the Grange • Tucked away on the New South Wales south coast is a museum that has grown from humble beginnings as the Illawarra Motor Museum in 1992 to now fill several large buildings spread over 4,000 square metres, with an eclectic assortment of motorcycles, cars, trucks and memorabilia.

A Scott in Southland • The story starts in the UK in 1973 when I tried to buy a basket case 1929 TT Replica Scott from a local character.

Apple Isle favourite Symmons Plains Tasmania • The Youl family has been entrenched in the history of Tasmania, and particularly Launceston, for more than two centuries, after Reverend John Youl, an English missionary, arrived from Tahiti and settled in the district. The family property was Symmons Plains Estate of 856ha, located just off the main Launceston to Hobart highway about 30km south of Launceston.

The All-Italian MAGNI • In issue 67 we brought you the feature story on the Magni MB2 BMW, the fully-fared version of the boxer twin of which only around 100 were built. That rare machine was imported to Australia by Old Gold Motorcycles in Sydney, but it’s not the only Magni to pass through their hands.

A HEINKEL OBSESSION • This is the story of an attempted adventurous motor scooter journey by three young men to ride from Braunscheig in Germany to Darwin, Australia during the northern winter of 1964-65. There were two Germans, Ralf Wolpers and Wolfram Boehm as well as myself, an Australian. The three of us commenced diaries during the trip, however I was the only one that managed to complete a day-to-day account of our adventures.

An RG in Wolf’s clothing • The flamboyant décor distinguishing an otherwise unexceptional motorcycle gives some insight into the man behind its creation. Walter Wolf was and still is a quite remarkable man – a man to whom success in any chosen field is a mandatory. So before we look at the motorcycle, it’s worth looking at the man.

That old familiar feeling • Happily, reports of the W800’s death were premature. When Kawasaki circulated information that production would cease in 2017, the rumble from around the world convinced them to perform the necessary updates to ensure the continued existence of a hugely popular and practical motorcycle that began life as the W650 20 years...
