Holden Monaro GTS • Monaros served for little more than two years as Holden s front line motorsport contender but the big V8 coupes enjoyed enormous success in that short space of time. And the General got it just right with the second series Monaro, the HT model.
When the rubber hits the road... • The odds were stacked against Holden and its new Monaro GTS 350 at Bathurst in 1969. The Falcon XW GT-HO opposition was superior in some key areas, and they outnumbered the Monaros two to one. But when the rubber hit the road, Ford was found wanting as the Holden Dealer Team raced away to score a remarkable victory.
Bathurst Bond • ‘Bathurst Bond’ was the name they were calling Colin Bond after his and Tony Roberts’ victory in the 1969 Hardie-Ferodo 1000 in their Holden Dealer Team Monaro HT GTS 350. Here Bond reflects on the whirlwind of success that he enjoyed upon becoming a factory driver for Holden that year.
Working for the man
Bondy’s Monaro memories • AMC sat down with Colin Bond armed with a handful of shots from back in the day. Here are the Monaro maestro’s recollections.
The sweetest victory • In this extract from his book, Holden and I Harry Firth recounts his decision to quit Ford to assume the reins of the new Holden Dealer Team in 1969, and how he led the squad to victory at Bathurst with the new HT model Monaro GTS 350.
No bearing on the result
Brock’s first Bathurst • The ’69 Great Race was a landmark year in that it featured the Mount Panorama debut of not only Allan Moffat, but also his future great rival Peter Brock. It was HDT boss Harry Firth who discovered Brock and gave him his big chance – and as history shows Brock didn’t disappoint. But as Harry Firth relates, some work was required to transform the bearded country boy into a factory racing driver.
Race and rally • The Monaro HT GTS 350’s life as Holden’s frontline contender in racing and rallying was short – but remarkably sweet. In fact, the often overlooked HT Monaro was only occasionally beaten by Ford’s Falcon XW GT-HO and it won almost every major Series Production race from October ’69 through to February the next year. The common factor in all of that success was one man: Colin Bond.
HT Monaro GTS and GTS 350 • The HT Monaro GTS and GTS 350 celebrate their golden anniversary in 2019. To celebrate, AMC presents 50 reasons to love them
The forgotten HDT man
Hello Norma Jean
The mechanic • In our two-part Muscle Man feature, Ron Gillard talks us through some of the many racecars he built, prepared, and sometimes even got to race, through the 1970s and ’80s – including the V8 Commodores and the later VL Turbo six model in production car racing, and the pivotal behind-the-scenes roles he played in the one-make Triumph TR7 and Ford Laser Series.
