Greetings from Mongolia

Ian James Warner Cameron • Australia’s first F.I.M. delegate

VJMC National Rally heads to Bendigo • It was a massive disappointment to all concerned when the 2020 VJMC National Rally set down for Toowoomba had to be cancelled because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Speedway ups and downs • It’s been a tough year for Valvoline Raceway, formerly Parramatta City Raceway, with the announcement late in 2019 that the long-serving venue would be one of 116 properties to be acquired and demolished to make way for a maintenance facility for the Sydney Metro West railway.

An age-old problem • Our frequent correspondent ANDREW DUNCAN recently contacted the Premier of New South Wales to highlight a situation unique to this state.

Large and small at Donington Auction • Sunday 22nd November sees the latest Donington Auction (live or on-line?) take place, featuring the collection of Mark Hilton and his brother Edward.

Big sales at Shannons • Shannons Winter Timed Online auctions held in August had a superb line up of motorcycles, with the top result of $42,500 achieved by a 1989 Yamaha FZ750R-R OWo1.

More drive for Ural • Up till now, the 2WD Ural Gear Up was only available in countries that drive on the right hand side of the road. Now Ural has engineered a left-side version and it will be available in Australia very soon.

Aussies swamp British Superbikes • Like most events worldwide, the 2020 Bennett’s British Superbike Championship was a truncated affair, but the action was as fierce as ever throughout the six-round series which contained 18 individual races.

Neil Kelly • Manxman NEIL KELLY, the last man to win an Isle of Man TT on a Velocette, passed away in September.

Neale Brumby • One of the most prominent motorcycle journalists in Australia, 63-year-old NEALE BRUMBY lost his battle to cancer on September 1st.

Michael Lockyer • Born in 1926 in London, MICHAEL LOCKYER served in WW2 in the British army stationed in India. After demobilization, he took up an offer from the Australian Government for free passage for skilled ex-serviceman and arrived in Melbourne in 1950.

A LIFE IN THE FAST LANE • In an earlier era he would have been the sort of Aussie that General Erwin Rommel feared and respected – a bloke with an innate ability to think on his feet with great clarity, use whatever was at hand to get the job done, all the while cracking jokes.

War Baby • At the opening of their massive state-of-the-art factory in late 1981, Yamaha impulsively declared its intention to become the world’s largest motorcycle manufacturer. This was no Pearl Harbour, allowing the big red #1 plenty of time to prepare for the attack. ‘Yamaha wo tsubusu!’ was Honda’s decidedly aggressive response. A rather blunt threat loosely interpreted as “We will crush, squash, slaughter, butcher Yamaha!” Or possibly all four!

A FAST ONE from Pfäffingen • Brendan vandeZand’s Maicoletta has done a lot of miles. Just recently it went from Melbourne to Sydney, then to London via Singapore, then back home again – without leaving its crate!

T Bird • Andy Westlake uncovers a handsome and original twin in the...
