THE MAN WITH TWO LIVES • Denis Trevor ‘Denny’ McCormack was anything but the archetypal motorcycle racer. When it was the norm for top riders to enjoy a drink or three and be comfortable up to their elbows in grease and grime, young Denis was the clean-living opposite.

Doctor knows best • The Moto Guzzi Daytona was never going to match the Japanese fours of the day, however, that wasn’t the point. This was a Guzzi that became an instant classic.

PARALLEL THOUGHTS • A common misconception is that the BSA A7 was the first twin to come from the Small Heath, Birmingham factory. It was certainly the first post-war BSA twin, but far from the first to bear the badge from the makers of ‘The Most Popular Motorcycle in the World’.

Veni, vidi, vici. “I came, I saw, I conquered.” • When NSU decided to attack the 250cc class of the World Championships, they produced a machine so superior it utterly dominated for two years.

A bash in the bush Mooliabeenie WA • The recent news that a resort/motor sport facility is to be built at Bindoon, 85km north of Perth, will be déjà vu for some of the state’s elder statesmen. The proposed facility, basically a US-style Country Club that will incorporate a 4.1km sealed circuit (at this stage not planned for racing but to allow wealthy owners of powerful motor vehicles a chance to test their skills away from the long arm of the law) is just down the road from Mooliabeenie (alternative spelling Mooliabeenee), which housed motor sport, particularly motor cycle road racing, in the 1950s.

Half a world away • A little known Italian marque surfaces in Melbourne.

THE MOTORCYCLE DESIGN > ART > DESIRE • The latest exhibition at QAGOMA (Queensland Art Gallery & Gallery of Modern Art) uses an unusual palette. ‘The Motorcycle – Design, Art, Desire’ was curated by Charles Falco and Ulton Guilfoyle who were also responsible for a similar exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum, New York in 1998.

OPERATION TRANSMATILDA • 68 years ago, two men set out from Melbourne on the ultimate product torture-test.

Sand blaster • For six years, from the inhospitable deserts of North Africa to the frozen lakes of Lapland, the Wehrmacht waged relentless war, with the BMW R75 a key component in the assault.

Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 What all the fuss is about • Royal Enfield could scarcely have predicted just what a goal it would kick with the new 650 twins when they finally rolled off the production line over three years ago.
