The journey worth taking

go! Motorcycle

What’s so good about it? • With the same facial expression worn by kids who ask why they have to eat Brussels sprouts, people ask: What’s so good about riding a motorcycle? Deon Meyer tries to explain this complicated pleasure.

The right motorcycle for you • Just how do you decide on the right kind of dual sport motorcycle? Do you go for big and fast, or one that’s smaller and simpler? The answer is both obvious and complicated.

If the boot fits • Boots can be divided into three categories: motorcycle shoes, low boots and full boots. Somewhere on this scale between shortest and longest, you’ll find the right boot for your type of riding. Your choice will depend on whether you prefer comfort over protection, how aggressive your riding style is and how brave you are in picking your adventures.

How to pick a tent • You could ride from one guesthouse to the next on a trip, but it’s more in keeping with the spirit of motorcycling to camp – and it’s cheaper. You do, however, need to put some thought into choosing a tent.

Pack light, but clever • The following list is for one person for one week, whether you’re touring through South Africa or a neighbouring country. All the items fit into your suit, backpack, duffle bag and the tool tube. All together, they weigh around 60 kg, of which you only need to carry 5 kg on your person.

Load up and go! • Here are some examples of how to pack soft luggage on a lighter bike and hard luggage on a heavier bike, but you can mix it up to whatever works best for you.

The romance of Cape roads • The roads in the Cape are like a stretched concertina, with everything from short narrow routes over sky-high passes to the uniform hills of the Overberg and Swartland. Leon Botha takes to the tar on a BMW R18.

To the lungs of Africa • Onno and Anne Sakkers from Pretoria have been up the east coast of Africa to Zanzibar and through Kaokoland along the west coast, but they had never crossed the equator by road. And so the couple embarked on a 6 000 km journey (not counting the return trip) to see the equatorial rain forests and our gentle cousins that dwell in the mist of the Congo. Most of us are familiar with Botswana and Namibia that comprised the initial part of the route, which is why we join them in Angola…

Painting a road in the sky • After more than a decade exploring the globe on motorcycles, Michnus and Elsebie Olivier from East London, found a gravel road in Bolivia that led them to discover what motorcycle adventure is truly about. They have sacrificed much to be able to see the world on two wheels and to experience the beauty of its cultures. This is a story of reaching that road, and of following their instincts.

Cooking on two wheels • Most bikers heading to the Buffalo or Rhino Rally survive well enough on garage pies and beer. But you’ll do more than just survive if you take a kitchen along to faraway destinations.

Bike-to-basics cooking • With only a small stove or campfire to cook on, virtually no storage space for extra cooking gear or produce, and a big appetite, careful planning of your snacks and meals become paramount on your next trip.

The bully beef challenge • Does all canned meat taste the same… or is there one tastier than the rest? What animal parts go into that tin, how many servings do you need to eat per day...
