The Bayliss Dynasty Part Two • Last issue, we left the Bayliss family packing for their great adventure in Europe…
You meet the nicest people.
Goldylocks • The motorcycle media called it “Brilliant… one of the highlights of the Show”. The fact that the new Douglas 90 Plus even appeared at the 1949 London Motorcycle Show was brilliant in itself, because the company was in the midst of yet another dalliance with bankruptcy; a receiver had been appointed in late 1948.

Strathpine Airstrip circuit Strathpine Qld. • It’s a fair bet that motorists who drive up and down Spitfire Avenue at Strathpine, about 25 kilometres north of Brisbane in the Morton Bay Region, would be unaware of the fact that this stretch of road was formerly the airstrip that made up the majority of the Strathpine racing circuit. The side road at Lancaster Street is roughly where the start and finish line stood.
ONE HUNDRED YEAR OF MOTO GUZZI • There have been ups and downs, but few companies can claim such a history of innovation as Moto Guzzi, which celebrated its 100th anniversary on March 15, 2021.

Fast but friendly • Everyone knows the Aprilia RSV4 1100cc engine is a magnificent piece of gear, on the road or on the track. But it’s wickedly fast and that may not exactly be your cup of tea. So how about the front half of the V4 – a nicely mannered, free-revving parallel twin with a 270º crank, with stacks of torque – 80% of the 67Nm of torque is already chimed in at just 4,000 rpm – and 100 horsepower surging through the rear wheel at the 10,500 rpm ceiling.
Facelift for a favourite • Since its introduction five years ago, nearly 2,000 of the 410cc Himalayans have been sold in Australia and New Zealand.

Intrepid Ariel enthusiasts • In all weathers you’ll find Kev Wheatley on his 1951 350cc NH Ariel but more amazing is what he carries on board. Earlier this year Kev lent me a booklet written by his long-time Toowoomba ride buddy Laurie Wenham. I found Laurie’s colourful way with words clever and comical. Sadly, Laurie recently passed away so in his honour, I have assembled some of his classic lines.
What a drunk nurse taught me about road-craft • In 56 years of riding motorcycles I have had two altercations with cars.
