ERF A-SERIES • Pt2: Peter Davies concludes the story of the highly innovative but ultimately fairly short-lived A Series.

PD's archive

PRIZEWINNING PAIR • Peter Simpson tells the heart-warming story of a pair of superbly-restored Atkinsons…

READY AND WILLING • Two contrasting Dennis vehicles from 1963 and 1971 form two thirds of the Peterborough Volunteer Fire Brigade fleet. Nick Larkin tells the story of them, and this unique and rather special fire-fighting organisation.

AT THE ROYAL WELSH… • Rural shows often result in numerous older horseboxes being bought out. Many of these cover tiny annual mileages, though given the ‘cargo’ they carry and the major problems that a breakdown with horses onboard would cause, maintenance tends to be impeccable. Consequently, they tend to last well, and many do in fact go on to be preserved. Anyway, here are six which regular contributor Chris Newsome spotted at this year’sRoyal Welsh Show near Builth Wells on July 20. As you can see, there seems to be something of a likeness for Mercedes-Benz products hereabouts...

DOCK WORKER • As Scammell would have celebrated its centenary this year, it’s appropriate to grace our centre spread with this classic working example photographed passing Britsh Railways Langton Dock Goods Yard on Liverpool’s dock road. Short, ballasted motive units like this were a Scammell speciality. NXJ569, from the fleet of David Rees & Co Ltd, dates from 1953 and is seen here hauling an independent drawbar trailer loaded with heavy steel joists.

LLANDUDNO IS BACK

FAIRGROUND CLASSICS • A new occasional series celebrating showman’s lorries

BUSINESS AS USUAL • Mike Neale tells the story of a one owner 1966 Morris Minor van that still works for the Surrey Ironmonger’s shop that bought it new.

FORD D-SERIES • Mike Neale begins a two-part look at models of Ford’s all-purpose sixties truck, starting with offerings from two major toy makers sold when the lorries were current.

SCAMMELL CONSTRUCTION • Nick Baldwin looks at how production methods at Tolpits Lane changed over the years.
