In the summer of 1895, Annie Johnston served as a delegate to the Methodist Church's International Epworth League Conference in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The conference focused on the church's outreach to Jewish communities around the world. Based on her experiences there, Johnston penned this novel, focusing on up-and-coming attorney David Herschel, whose chance encounter with jolly salesman Frank B. Marion proves to be a life-changing experience.
