MAMMOTH RESTORATION • Back in 1983, Fraser Clayton rescued this ex-Whitbread 1951 AEC Mammoth Major MkIII from a scrapyard and undertook a full restoration. Forty years on, it’s still stunning. Mike Neale tells the story…

THE PERFECT GIFT FOR THE VINTAGE LORRY ENTHUSIAST

TIMELESS CLASSIC • In the words of Gilbert & Sullivan’s lyrics ‘She could very well pass for forty-three…’ and that’s how long ago this T45 Leyland Constructor took to the roads. The stylish Ogle designed C40 cab produced by Motor Panels would not look out of place today. The cab was certainly ahead of its time and a credit to Leyland. This tastefully liveried curtainsider is a particularly impressive example owned by well known Oxfordshire Fruit and Veg wholesalers Harold Hicks. Harold founded the business in the 1920s and his son Malcolm took over in the 1980s. The business survived until Malcolm’s retirement in 2015.

Carrying on • We welcome photos of older lorries (15 years and older) that are still in service for publication in this section. We can accept contributions by email - cvc.ed@kelsey.co.uk, or by post to The Editor, Classic & Vintage Commercials, PO Box 1243, SPALDING, PEl 1 9HE. Please provide as much (or as little) information about a vehicle as you are able and, before entering or taking photos on private property, please ensure that you have all the permissions that you need to be there, and to be taking photographs.

HEART OF WALES ROAD RUN • A few changes this year for the 25th anniversary event. David Reed was there.

FRUITY FAMILY FORDSON • Mike Neale tells the story of an eye-catching E83W Pick-up…

MODEL CORNER 1940s-70s COMMER AND KARRIER FORWARD CONTROL LORRIES • Pt1: For the next couple of months, Mike Neale is turning his attention to some Rootes Group commercials.

STEERING WHEEL REFURBISHMENT • During a recent trip to the Kent coast, the Editor meets a man who can, and learns a lot…

BORDERER TO CORRIS • Back in August, a 1972 Atkinson Borderer was used for a significant and highly appropriate haulage job. Here’s the full story…

The Load and Location

MORE RUBBISH • The series continues, but this month ‘More trash’ might be a more appropriate title, as Nick Baldwin is looking mainly at stateside refuse collection…
