MEET THE AUTHOR • In his photography book, The Boer War in Colour — Volume 1, Tinus le Roux dusts off black-and-white photos from a pivotal event in South African history and gives them new life in colour.

Mr Claude and I • Growing up in Kuruman, Lorato Trok remembers the important role the Moffat Mission - and a very cantankerous goat - played in her life.

Slackpack with soul • On the Shoreline of the San trail, the rugged scenery of the West Coast envelops you like a cool fog bank. And on those remote beaches, the southeaster will blow your worries away.

Make time for Ithala • Ithala Game Reserve is one of KwaZulu-Natal’s best-kept secrets, and the perfect place for a short, wild break.

A ramble to the furthest reaches • In Namibia, it often feels like you’re the first person to travel through a landscape, that you’ve been transported to another, wilder era. Come get lost in the Kunene Region in the north-west of the country - in a good way.

TAKE YOUR PIC • Somewhere out there, a beautiful photo awaits. Go take it! Then send it to Toast Coetzer at takeyourpic@gomag.co.za

Smokiń hot! • You don't need a smoker to infuse your dishes with a delicious smoky flavour. Ingredients like smoked paprika, bacon and smoked snoek bring all the taste - with a shortcut.

Power down • Loadshedding is part of our everyday vocabulary, and it will be for some time. There seems to be no light at the end of the tunnel for us or for Eskom. Not everyone can afford expensive solar panels and inverters; thankfully there are more affordable ways to survive power outages.
