PHIL WHITE A MYSTERY IS SOLVED

ROBIN FLETCHER TRANSIT

STRANGE BEDFELLOWS • A 1965 Jaguar E-Type and a 1933 Riley Monaco Sprite might make for an unusual pairing, but for owner John Barrott they complement each other nicely.

A CAR FOR THE WORLD • Mark Denton's 1952 Standard Vanguard Phase 1A Estate evokes a lost motoring realm of pipe-smoking drivers negotiating fog-strewn B-roads. Arguably more importantly, it is also a prime example of the UK's first attempt at a World Car.

GRACE AND PACE • Philip Dopson's MGA has an interesting history, having been assembled originally in Ireland from a CKD kit and later spending time in Italy. It is now back in the UK with a few subtle modifications under that elegant skin and enjoying a gentle retirement.

PEOPLE AND PLACES THE SHUTTLEWORTH COLLECTION • Following last month’s visit to the British Commercial Vehicle Museum in Leyland, we have another slightly off-piste venue to bring you this issue on the form of the Shuttleworth Collection at the Old Warden Aerodrome in Bedfordshire.

THREE WHEELS ON MY WAGON… • Having tested out a 1960s Regal recently, we return to the world of three-wheelers by examining a Reliant Robin from near the end of production.

Iain gets sidetracked — again!

More progress than it seems

One in, one out

Where does the time go?

MORRIS MARINA PROJECT • Welcome to our latest long-term project – a 1974 Morris Marina 1.8 Super Deluxe four-door saloon. It might not be the most fashionable of choices, but there is a core of enthusiasts who appreciate the model and all that it can offer the classic enthusiast. This is how and why we got ours.

OUR INITIAL ASSESSMENT

FIAT 500 PROJECT • Concerns over what lies beneath the thick underseal sees the emphasis move from cutting out rust to removing the steering and suspension.

VW JETTA GTI • Testing, Testing, 1,2,3 Testing – if only it were that simple. Will Holman takes our project Jetta GTi for an inspection by the dreaded MoT man.

RENAULT 5 • One of Europe’s longest-lived superminis and a best seller for many years, the Renault 5 range offers everything from runabout to hot hatch.

YOU MIGHT ALSO CONSIDER… • Classics World editor Simon Goldsworthy and Senior Operations Manager at Lancaster Andrew Evanson each choose one car that they would recommend as an alternative.

THE BMW 3-SERIES • Replacing the 02 was inevitably a significant challenge for BMW, but by the early 1980s the 3-Series defined an entire class, leading Autocar to write: ‘We are sorry to say there is virtually no true competitor in the ranks of British models.’ This is the story of the first two generations.

THE SALES PITCH • This issue, we take another trawl through the brochure archives, looking at how various manufacturers from Austin to Vauxhall have pitched their wares to the buying public through the decades.

The TRUTH about… the Chrysler 180 and 2-litre • Terry Burgess wonders: was Chrysler Europe's 1970s flagship really as bad as he imagines?

FUTURE Classics • Welcome to the section of the magazine that focuses on cars from the 1990s and 2000s, cars which are often accepted as classics already – or which soon will be.

MODERN CLASSICS AT AUCTION • Auction houses are awash...
