RILEY'S PATHFINDER

IAIN AYRE RUBBER RABBIT • BIO: Iain Ayre's automotive enthusiasms span everthing from Minis to Bentleys. He has prototyped several car designs without commercial success, and has written 18 books on random motoring subjects. He continues to avoid getting a proper job.

PHIL WHITE YOUNG FOLK'S HOME • BIO: Phil White's first job, at 15, involved restoring classic cars. A decade later he began writing about them in magazines. 35 years on, he's still at it. He plans to grow up at some point, but in the meantime climbing rocks, running, cycling and, you know, writing about classic cars, seem to get in the way.

ROBIN FLETCHER MG, OR NOT MG? • BIO: Welcome to journalist and editor Robin Fletcher, who is our newest columnist. Robin has never worked in the motor trade, but he loves cars, has driven in 12 different countries and once changed the front brake pads on his first Metro.

UNDERSTATED, NOT AUSTERE! • In 1968, the C1-series 100 established Audi as a manufacturer of executive transport to rival BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Rover and Triumph. Steve Love's 1972 GL is one of the few surviving examples of the saloon that founded a dynasty of fine vehicles wearing the four-ring logo.

KEEPING IT IN THE FAMILY • Sally Midlen's parents bought this Spitfire before she was even born. At various times over the ensuing decades her father, her grandfather and her mother have all been the main drivers, and now it is Sally's turn. Sometimes, she even lets husband John have a go behind the wheel!

A TWO-LITRE V6 CAPRI ARE YOU SURE? • We are familiar with the V4 and Pinto-engined two-litre Capri in the UK, but this is a variant that we never got, powered as it is by a 1998cc OHV Cologne V6.

MERAKULOUS • After 50 years of dreaming, Rob Ridley took the plunge and bought a Maserati Merak SS to use as a daily driver. He has not regretted it.

LAKELAND MOTOR MUSEUM OUT OF THE BLUE • It was once a factory making blue powder, but now this stone building in Cumbria is a densely-packed, intense hall of motoring wonders.

THE CAR THAT SAVED BMW • In 1959, the remains of BMW were offered to Daimler-Benz at a knock down price. Only the intervention of the Quandt family and the potential of the new BMW 700 saved the firm. Lawrence Glynn tells the story.

MAGNIFICENT MOTORING! • We take a 75 year old Riley on a 275 mile run across Britain from South Molton to Spalding, with a scenic route and steep hills thrown in for good measure.

Swamped, but always room for more!

Brakes stop play – temporarily

No go, but lots to show

All systems are 'Go'

PROJECT MARINA • We rebuild the OSF corner of our Marina, a time-consuming repair that required a number of repair panels, but made a huge difference.

AUSTIN A30/A35 • Despite their antics in historic motorsport and at the Goodwood Revival, the Austin A30 and A35 remain great value.
