First of the line • The extraordinary collection of Dr Peter and Ulrike Bühner was auctioned on February 1, 2023. We have some details and pictures of the various, incredible machines, to feature in the next few issues. We start off with the oldest, the 1894 Hildebrand & Wolfmüller

Class above • During the 1950s and 60s, in motorcycling circles ‘BMW’ was a byword for quality.

The postponed party • The Moto Guzzi concern was born in 1921 and is still going strong – even if the centennial celebrations had to be a little delayed.

Soul survivor • Recovered from Italy after over 75 years, this magnificent wartime BSA has history to spare – and heart.

Sidcup’s good clean fun • Held on December 4, 2022, the Jack Thompson British Bike Trial continues to attract a healthy entry.

America’s finest • These two Henderson Fours were made only a year apart, although one largely represents the last of the old, the other the first of the new.

Quiet exit • Meriden man Harry Woolridge described the 1966 5TA as: “Not the ultimate but certainly the last Speed Twin”. Despite this example’s charm, it’s hard to disagree.

At the Deubel • Winner of the 1961 and 1962 GP sidecar titles, Max Deubel, crewed by Emil Hörner on his all-powerful BMW RS54-engined outfit, was favourite for the 1963 title. But he would be given no easy time by Florian Camathias, Georg Auerbacher and Fritz Scheidegger, also running BMW engines, albeit with a little less power.
