Classic Jaguar

Feb/Mar 2024
Magazine

Classic Jaguar aims to be the definitive celebration of this most iconic of British motoring marques. It will chart the historic journey of a car maker that started life in 1922 as the Swallow Sidecar Company in Blackpool. The company soon evolved into a Coventry based manufacturer of sports cars. With a new factory and glamorous new models, Jaguar was flying from the 1950s onwards as it exported cars like the MkVII saloon and XK120 around the world and achieved huge motorsport success at Le Mans. Classic Jaguar magazine aims to relive these golden moments, looking back in time at this magical era for Jaguar, profiling the people, the places and, crucially, the cars that made the company what it is today. With its focus on the traditional, classic models of the past, Classic Jaguar will be the perfect complement to the comprehensive coverage readers can also enjoy in Jaguar World magazine.

SPORTING HEROES • 007 very nearly got an E-type for the Goldfinger film - but he also came close to a Jaguar in the novel upon which it was based. Which of these original Goldfinger cars makes for the best classic experience today?

THIRD ALBUM • Jaguar scored a hit with its first home-grown engine, the XK of 1948. But when it came to its second go, it aimed high. And the E-type Series 3 was the first beneficiary of the new V12 unit.

THE RETURN TO INDEPENDENCE • With 2024 marking 40 years since Jaguar managed to prise itself away from the might of BL, we examine the background to that short-lived period of independence.

OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS • The story of the XK engine's other Jabbeke run – in four cylinder form.

THE D -TYPE IDEA • Norman Dewis is the man behind the extensive road testing of the 1953 Le Mans Jaguar XK120Cs, and all things Jaguar thereafter. He puts the first automatic MkVII through a heavy-duty test procedure at MIRA and loads the car with ‘real people’ for the final run. The in-car discussion is quite interesting.

THE ABBOTT XK120 • Paul remembers a unique coachbuilt XK120 from the early Fifties that was a precursor to the E-type 2+2.

LONG DISTANCE CRUISER • Why do so many people see high mileage as a problem?

2024 EVENTS SEASON • Based on 2023 we're looking forward to another busy and successful season in 2024.

PLACES TO GO, THINGS TO BUY • The Jaguar Drivers' Club can help you with Jaguar spares, gifts and tours.

JAGUAR ENTHUSIASTS' CLUB TURNS 40! • Wayne Scott ponders just what the Ruby anniversary will mean for the club.

INSIDE THE JAGUAR DAIMLER HERITAGE TRUST • The activities of the Trust are explained through their staff, volunteers & exhibits.

RED HERRING • In a break from the usual Touring format, this one focuses more upon the car than the place. Peter Simpson visits Tom Lenthall's workshop to drive a newly enlivened XJ Coupé.

FURTHER PROGRESS • We're still playing catchup with our Daimler's to do list.

EXAMINING AN AUTOMATIC CHOKE • It's an early form of automatic choke and was fitted on the Jaguar XK120 up to the Mk1, but how does it work and what can go wrong with it? Follow our guide to find out more about the auxiliary starting carburettor.

MARKET WATCH • In this regular section, we take a look at some of the most notable Jaguars and Daimlers to have sold in 2023.

BUYING GUIDE JAGUAR XJ40 • What you need to know to buy the best of this underrated family.

TRIED & TESTED ALL NINE LIVES LEFT • We test a storied XK150S with just two owners from new and a colourful rally...
