Classic Jaguar

Jun/Jul 2023
Magazine

Classic Jaguar aims to be the definitive celebration of this most iconic of British motoring marques. It will chart the historic journey of a car maker that started life in 1922 as the Swallow Sidecar Company in Blackpool. The company soon evolved into a Coventry based manufacturer of sports cars. With a new factory and glamorous new models, Jaguar was flying from the 1950s onwards as it exported cars like the MkVII saloon and XK120 around the world and achieved huge motorsport success at Le Mans. Classic Jaguar magazine aims to relive these golden moments, looking back in time at this magical era for Jaguar, profiling the people, the places and, crucially, the cars that made the company what it is today. With its focus on the traditional, classic models of the past, Classic Jaguar will be the perfect complement to the comprehensive coverage readers can also enjoy in Jaguar World magazine.

FIRST NEWS OF JAGUAR’S ELECTRIC FUTURE

MARKET WATCH • In this regular section, we take a look at some of the most tempting Jaguars and Daimlers to have sold in recent weeks – from affordable classics through to premium-priced gems

BOARDROOM DECISION • If you were doing well in the early 1970s, a Rover P6 3500 was almost a badge of rank. But if you were doing really well, its British Leyland sister car the Jaguar XJ6 would be within reach. But was the jump from a Rover to a 2.8 XJ6 really worth it, or would you have been better saving for a 4.2?

NOT MEANT TO BE • Rumour suggests that Jaguar intentionally made the XJ40 engine bay too narrow for a V engine to force development of a new six. As the shortest-lived V12 Jaguar turns thirty, we examine its story.

BOYHOOD AMBITION • Eliot Barden grew up around XK8s – this convertible has been a labour of love.

DAIMLER V8 SALOON • What you need to know to buy the Mk2’s less popular sibling.

THE FAMILY E-TYPE • Five years after the debut of the original E-type came a version offering extra practicality, its increased length allowing fitment of a child-friendly back seat. Paul Guinness charts the history of the long-lived 2+2

C-TYPE SCRAPBOOK • “Breaking for spares – C-type Jaguar” – sounds unlikely, but is part of XKC034s story, recounted by owner Tom Jaycox…

OWNING THE WORLD’S GREATEST CLASSIC SPORTSCAR? NO THANKS. • Why Paul won’t swap his XK8 for an E-type.

WIN 1 …. THE REMARKABLE LIFE OF THE UNASSUMING RACER • In a break from her traditional diary, Xclusively Jaguar’s Letitia Mace discusses a new book about racing driver Win Percy.

LESS SMART, MORE BRIGHT. • Cancelling the smart motorway programme couldn’t come a moment too soon, says Sam.

SUMMER EVENTS DIARY

ALL DRESSED UP – BUT WHERE SHOULD WE GO?

INSIDE THE JAGUAR DAIMLER HERITAGE TRUST • The activities of the Trust are explored through its staff, volunteers and exhibits.

NEWS FROM THE WORKSHOP

THE NEW, NEW ENGINE • Post-war production resumes – and with steady sales, focus turns to new developments. Some serious tuning and several miles of empty Belgian motorway mean that the first Jaguar XJ engine doesn’t disappoint. Then, with 2 more cylinders, Jaguar’s first 120mph prototype makes its debut.

UP TO THE MARK

LONG TIME COMING

EIS FOR ÉIRE • With an eagerness to resume touring, Lord Kermit the Viridescent has been pressed into service.
