Classic Jaguar

Feb/March 2023
Magazine

Classic Jaguar aims to be the definitive celebration of this most iconic of British motoring marques. It will chart the historic journey of a car maker that started life in 1922 as the Swallow Sidecar Company in Blackpool. The company soon evolved into a Coventry based manufacturer of sports cars. With a new factory and glamorous new models, Jaguar was flying from the 1950s onwards as it exported cars like the MkVII saloon and XK120 around the world and achieved huge motorsport success at Le Mans. Classic Jaguar magazine aims to relive these golden moments, looking back in time at this magical era for Jaguar, profiling the people, the places and, crucially, the cars that made the company what it is today. With its focus on the traditional, classic models of the past, Classic Jaguar will be the perfect complement to the comprehensive coverage readers can also enjoy in Jaguar World magazine.

CLASSIC JAGUAR

XK8 – FUTURE OR PRESENT CLASSIC?

UP FRONT • We at Classic Jaguar are very pleased to be associated with three parties whose contributions have been recognised in the wider classic community:

PRODUCT NEWS • We catch up with the latest must-have products and accessories aimed at today’s classic Jaguar owner

OBSESSIVE COMPULSIVE XJS • Classic car ownership frequently becomes an obsession, Mike Freeman adds a dash of compulsion and freely admits it may well have become a disorder…

DRIVE ANOTHER DAY • Two decades ago, a Jaguar XKR nearly stole the limelight from an Aston Martin in Die Another Day. We go behind the scenes to see what was involved in making this gadget-packed mobile weapon go dancing on ice

TRACKDAY TENDERFOOT • We believe in actually using our classic Jaguars (at least, the editor does…). Flashing blue lights and speed cameras – plus a healthy sense of selfpreservation deter us from exploring the limits – there is an answer:

HAVE YOUR SAY • In the last issue, we asked for your thoughts on Nichola Osbourne’s letter and the response from the major clubs – we weren’t disappointed!

ENGLAND’S GLORY • Who thought that Peter Simpson harbours delusions of being a reincarnated 60s British spy? He takes the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust’s ‘Shaguar’ on a South Downs tour to bolster the fallacy…

IDENTITY CRISIS E-TYPE • Trevor Bowkett shares the story of his rather interesting E-type restoration, facilitated by an unrepeatable coincidence…

TWO MAJOR SHOWS – THEN A NEW VENUE FOR SPARES DAY…

XCLUSIVELY LETITIA

LOOKING TO THE FUTURE -ENCOURAGING THE NEXT GENERATION

E IS FOR EXHIBITIONIST • Peter’s E-type gains a title, and he becomes uncharacteristically precious over its appearance – that doesn’t last long, though…

THE ERIC DYMOCK ARCHIVE

BOREHAM -WHAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN… • Fast and challenging, Boreham could have been the UK’s premier race circuit, virtually equalling the speeds attained at Silverstone. And yet as the 1953 season was about to start, racing at Boreham in Essex was cancelled

PAUL KEATING’S XJ40 JOURNAL • Paul has a cool option added, passes a crucial test and celebrates FVCs return to the road…

KICKING THE BUCKET • There’s a tapping sound from under the bonnet. Not the usual sound of wide valve clearances or general engine movements, but deeper, hollow almost, increasing as the revs rise. Be afraid. Be very afraid…

INSIDE THE JAGUAR DAIMLER HERITAGE TRUST

THE TRUST ACQUIRES AN IMPORTANT NEW EXHIBIT

SECRETS OF: CORROSION PREVENTION • In the last issue we covered the winter ‘laying up’ of your classic – an ideal time to address long term preservation. Follow Craig Talbot’s tips to achieve automotive prolonged existence…

ON TRACK • As usual, there was no lack of Jaguar interest at ‘The Revival’, both on the circuit and in the public car...
