Rolls-Royce & Bentley Driver

January - February 2023
Magazine

Celebrating two of Britain's most prestigious automotive marques, Rolls-Royce & Bentley Driver magazine is the definitive publication for all Rolls-Royce and Bentley enthusiasts and owners. Principally focusing on the classic models of these luxurious car brands, it will offer comprehensive coverage of the most popular versions from both Rolls-Royce and Bentley, ranging from immediately after WW2 up to around the turn of the millennium. Undoubtedly, there will be some coverage of pre-war models, and we will feature modern classics such as the Bentley GT coupe. Whatever the model, however, our aim with Rolls-Royce & Bentley Driver magazine is to offer a mix of owners' stories, buying advice, technical hints and tips and inspiration on how to restore, maintain, and, crucially, enjoy your favourite Rolls-Royce or Bentley.

'THE CROWN' PICKS NINETIES-ERA ROLLS-ROYCE AND BENTLEY FOR PREMIERE

MOUNTBATTEN'S MASCOT

AUSTRALIAN ROLLS-ROYCE OWNERS MARK 100 YEARS OF THE 20HP

BENTLEY'S BEST-EVER RESULTS

FIFTY YEARS OF COMFORT

ALL-TIME HIGH • The R-type Continental is the most valuable post-war Bentley road car, yet the S-series was created as its improved successor. This example, restored and thoroughly sorted, should therefore be an absolute high point for the marque

PUTTING THE FAST INTO FASTBACK • The shape of the R-type and S-series Continental fastback is instantly recognisable. It's one of the great automotive outlines, despite only 208 R-type and 119 S1 Continentals being built with fastback bodies. Yet the car's blend of high performance, sumptuous luxury and startling price (three and a half times greater than that of the average house in 1952) guaranteed fame. But above all, it was the looks: as sleek as a jet aircraft, and as well- proportioned as a Greek statue. It was a superb design - but how much did it owe to a few earlier stepping stones?

MARKET WATCH • Each issue, we take a look at some of the most tempting cars for sale and report on others that have sold - covering everything from affordable modern classics through to the most premium-priced gems

PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE • The restoration of this 1932 Rolls-Royce utilised some amazing heritage skills but also inspired an enthusiasm that would lead to a remarkable new bespoke model from Rolls-Royce themselves

THE NEW BOAT TAIL

YOUR SHOUT • Got something to say about anything Rolls-Royce or Bentley related? Then we want to hear it!

GETTING OUR HANDS DIRTY

NO MATCH FOR A ROLLS-ROYCE • The longest, most gruelling rally in the world demands a tough, simple rally car. So how on Earth did two adventurous Australians conquer it in a 1975 Silver Shadow?

PREPPING A SILVER SHADOW FOR THE P2P

PADGETT MOTOR ENGINEERS • Established way back in 1957, Padgett’s have become a world authority on the R-type Continental and are still run by Jeremy, son of founder Alan Padgett

A LIFE IN CARS • From a childhood marvelling at classics on the Southend sea-front to a career organising major car shows, it’s safe to say James Martin likes his motors… and none more than the Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit

OOPS, I DID IT AGAIN

AN ANATOMY OF… THE BENTLEY CONTINENTAL GT, GTC AND FLYING SPUR • New Bentleys for…well, a new Bentley Motors. Reborn under Volkswagen, the British marque had to demonstrate that it could stand alone without Rolls- Royce. The Continental GT, GTC and Flying Spur proved that beyond any doubt

FLYING WITH FOUR DOORS

THE VIEW

RACE FOR THE TOP POT • The Club’s forthcoming Competitions Day will reward the various motorsport successes of the past season - but who will claim the coveted Racing Driver of the Year trophy?
