Go! Drive & Camp

The legend of the Lost Valley • In a remote valley in KwaZulu-Natal, five families have hidden from the rest of the world for 111 years. Or have they? This sounds like the perfect excuse for a trip into the past…

Where we stayed

I also want to go!

Among the (grumpy) ellies • The Tshugulu 4x4 eco-route isn't widely marketed by the Mapungubwe National Park – actually it's only guests at the Tshugulu Lodge that really have access to it.

what you need to know

Below the sill • Few sights beat the view from God's Window. They say that on a clear day you can see as far as Mozambique. But have you ever wondered where that dirt road directly below you at the base of the precipice leads? Here's where – and how to drive it.

What you need to know

Namaqua goal • There's an attractive nature reserve called Goegap 7 km outside Springbok in the Northern Cape. It boasts an arresting 4x4 route that is especially popular in late winter and early spring.

Here's what you need to know

Get lost on the West Coast • Thanks to their proximity to Cape Town, it's no surprise that West Coast villages such as Yzerfontein and Langebaan are popular getaways. When you want to experience the true West Coast, however, you need to head much farther north.

I also want to go!

Where to stay

From Die Hel to De Hoop • Mountains draw you in, especially if you love passes, valleys and views. The Swartberg mountain range has no fewer than 17 passes… and before you descend to the ocean, there's a mysterious kloof to visit.

Meiringspoort's drifts

Stay here

I also want to go!

Over the hills and far away • The Overberg is known for its rolling hills, covered in golden canola and emerald wheat fields in winter. Most people race through the region along the N2, blissfully ignorant of the lovely dirt roads waiting to be explored.

Where we stayed and what we drove

I also want to go!

Passes aplenty • The Warm and Cold Bokkeveld are two of the most fertile regions in South Africa. This route is surrounded by citrus orchards south of the Cederberg and berry trees at the foot of snow-capped peaks.

What you need to know

East, west, South Africa's best • France has the Eiffel Tower and Thailand lovely beaches. New York has Central Park and the Statue of Liberty, and Rome the Colosseum. But the best destinations in the world are right here in South Africa!

I also want to go!

Our overnight stops

M stands for more! • Join us as we visit three national parks with names starting with an M: Mokala, Marakele, and Mapungubwe. Coincidentally, you can draw a straight line that stretches across 900 km to link these three reserves. Hop in and let's go…

Plea for the rhinos

A river of legend • Follow the Orange River from source to mouth, and Southern Africa's longest river will reveal its true riches along the way.
